The Bordon & Liphook Charity
The Bordon & Liphook Charity is a unique organisation. It consists of a trading arm - that is, two well run charity shops - Bordon Care Shop Limited and Liphook Care Shop Limited. The profits realised by the shops provides the finance which facilitates the delivery of assistance and social welfare by The Bordon & Liphook Charity.
On the other pages in this web site there are details of the two shops along with a full copy of the charity's latest Annual Report - all of which clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of having a local community working for itself. The self supporting nature of The Bordon & Liphook Charity means it does not draw down on either public or other charity resources and, in our humble opinion, is a "model" which could (should) be replicated in every town.
The aims of the Charity are to help local people with their problems and to assist local organisations to function smoothly. To that end the two charity shops, which are open for business from 09.30 to 16.30 on Mondays to Fridays 09.30 to 16.30, and 09.30 to 16.00 on Saturdays, are staffed from a pool of some 57 or so volunteers. The shops sell the generously donated goods turning them into profits, which is passed to the Charity. The Trustees meet every three weeks or so to make grants, never knowing the identity of the applicants as they only work on case numbers.
The original concept(s) were to provide an outlet of low priced items for the less well off and use the proceeds to deliver grant aid to other local organisations and bodies. The success of the grants aspect of the charity can be measured by reviewing the value of the grants awarded - 10 years ago this amounted to some £6,500, but in 2008 this figure has increased to £58,621. This amazing result is not only due to hard work of the volunteers and the management team but also the wonderful generosity of those who live locally, who continue to give donations and support the two shops.
